Johnny Carson’s Former Malibu Estate is Fit for a King (of Late Night)

Despite the frequency with which America’s current crop of late night talkshow hosts have been finding themselves at the forefront of the national zeitgeist of late (people saying one’s material is too political, people saying another’s isn’t political enough, and the occasional light-hearted segment that goes viral), none of them can really hold a candle to the late Johnny Carson. Granted, Carson (who died in 2005) only had two other networks with which to do battle for most of his career, but the grace and apparent ease with which he, longtime sidekick Ed McMahon and the rest of the crew made TV magic (and not just in the sense) that was frequently the topic of water cooler conversation the next day. And now, the original King of Late Night’s former oceanfront home is for sale.

Situated atop a cliff in Malibu, California, this 39-year-old house was designed by famed modernist architect Ed Niles. Its 7,083 square feet of living space (on a 4.1 acre lot) include two bedrooms, five bathrooms, an elevator up to the master suite (which occupies the entirety of the second floor), and 30’ high windows in the living room. Outside you’ll find a full championship-sized tennis court, a saltwater swimming pool and an outdoor dining area, to name just a few of the amenities. Of course, with all that content, an idyllic location and celebrity provenance, this place isn’t going to be cheap: The current owners are asking $81.5 million for the joint. Any takers?
