Ducati may be the Italian motorcycle maker that most Americans recognize, but MV Agusta is no slouch when it comes to crotch rockets either. The company’s current top dog, the F4, is tangible proof of this, with its 998cc four-banger throwing down 186hp through a slipper clutch. Riders of most Ducatis and Japanese superbikes are right to not take the F4’s threat lightly.

Notice, however, that we said most riders as opposed to all riders. There are still some bikes out there that have the F4’s number, and it should go without saying that some throttle jockeys simply have itches the F4 can’t scratch. Luckily for them, MV Agusta has created a hotter F4, the 2012 F4 RR.

The biggest news is under the gas tank, where you’ll find the four-pot mill now measures an even 1,000cc thanks to a wider bore and shorter stroke. This new “oversquare” configuration yields higher revs (The rev-limiter now cries “Uncle!” at 13,700 rpm.) and increased power (An are-you-freaking-kidding-me 201hp.). Other output-raising tricks include a freer-breathing version of the wild 4-into-2-into-1-into-4 exhaust, larger intake and exhaust valves made from titanium (an MV Agusta first), and a quartet of 49mm throttlebodies. The cassette-type gearbox and mechanical slipper clutch remain present-and-accounted-for.

The front and rear suspension (featuring Öhlins dampers) are fully adjustable, as is the steering head angle. The F4 RR dumps 2.2 lb. of unsprung weight at each end by using forged aluminum wheels in place of the cast pieces found on the regular F4. The brakes are clamped down upon by Brembo calipers, which are fed by Brembo radial master cylinders. There’s even a flap under the lower triple clap to help feed more air into the radiator.

Still leaves you cold? Okay, what if we told you that MV Agusta offers certain components in even lighter materials like aircraft aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber? Or that you can order a race-spec exhaust system and ECU to make it an even fiercer track day foe? Guess what: You can. Of course, such kit will only fatten the F4 RR’s yet-to-be-disclosed price tag, and you can bet that will be on the high side. But when, pray tell, have sphincter-shrinking performance and be-the-first-in-your-timezone exclusivity come cheap?
